David Archuleta Makes a Heartfelt Comeback to American Idol

David Archuleta makes a poignant return to the American Idol stage, but this time, he's not competing for the top spot. The 33-year-old, known for his runner-up status in the show's seventh season back in 2008 and his recent appearance as the Macaw on The Masked Singer, graced Monday's episode to perform his latest single, "Hell Together."

Following his moving performance, David opened up to host Ryan Seacrest about the song's personal significance. He shared,

“I grew up deeply entrenched in my faith and religion, but I came out a couple of years ago. Balancing faith and coming out became too overwhelming, so I decided to step away."

In the aftermath of his performance, days passed without hearing from his mom, leading him to worry that he had disappointed her. Aware of her devout beliefs, he braced himself for a potentially difficult conversation. However, when her message finally arrived, it carried an unexpected acknowledgment. She expressed that she, too, had chosen to step away from the church, echoing David’s message.

“After my performance, I didn't hear from my mom for a few days. I thought, 'Oh no, I must have upset her.' She was also very devout. But then she texted me and said, 'I stepped away from the church as well.' I was stunned. She expressed, 'I don't want to be part of a place where my children don't feel loved and accepted. If you're going to hell, then we're all going to hell with you.’”

In the lyric video's description on YouTube, Archuleta further delved into the song's message, dedicating it to those who exemplify unconditional love amidst societal judgment. It's a tribute to the profound love his mother showed him during a time of immense personal struggle.
