Steven Tyler Rocks “Dream On” at Miss Universe 2013 Pageant

avatar

Steven Tyler
put the skills he learned as a judge on American Idol to good use over the weekend when he sat on the panel to help choose this year’s Miss Universe in Moscow, Russia.

In addition to his role as a judge, the iconic singer also performed a rendition ofAerosmith’s “Dream On” at the pageant, during which he rocked out at and on top of the piano as the contestants stood behind him.

And dreams did come true for Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler, who was crowned Miss Universe 2013 at the end of the night.

Following the event, Tyler took to his official Twitter page to congratulate the winner and note that it was an “epic epic epic night!”

In Aerosmith news, the band was recently revealed to be one of the headliners for the 2014 edition of the UK’s Download Festival, which is set to take place from June 13-15 in Donington Park. The performance will mark the band’s first in England since 2010.

Outside of their comfort zone these nurses will have to make new friends, maintain existing friendships, dive into a new dating pool and continuously prove themselves to the staff nurses at their new hospital. But it’s not all work and no play – this group loves to blow off some steam during their downtime. It’s a lot for these twenty-something’s to take on but this energetic, fearless and outgoing group of young nurses are determined to have it all, including a rewarding career and personal life. “Scrubbing In” premieres Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Mark Ballas’ Debut Album Is a Long Time Coming

avatar

I’ve been playing guitar every day since I was nine years old,” saysMark Ballas, an entertainment veteran who’s spent the past six years making a name for himself on ABC’s competition series “Dancing With the Stars.”

He describes his sound as “something you can move to.” During a recent live performance at the Sayers Club in Los Angeles, where he currently holds a bi-weekly residency, that compulsion to move to his songs becomes all too apparent.

In front of a nine-piece band, complete with a full horns section, he belts out tracks that are built for a club setting, and dances right along with everyone around him.

When offered the word “intense” as a descriptor of his live act, Ballas agrees. “Intense is a good word,” he says, laughing.

“DWTS” proved to be the reason Ballas relocated to Los Angeles, but it wasn’t always in the cards. Before picking up the regular network TV gig, he was making a living on the musical theater circuit, playing shows like Copacabana and The Buddy Holly Story.

Music is in Mark’s blood. Ballas grew up in a family of performers. His father was a Flamenco guitarist and his grandmother was a famous Flamenco dancer.

As a teenager, he developed a taste for jazz, rock and funk, and soon began incorporating those genres into his sound. Fast forward to today: Ballas, 27, not only touts an impressive fanbase, but he’s also shared the stage with the likes of Robin Thicke, will.i.am and Prince. It’s a sturdy jumping off point for his next project—a debut album he expects to release in early 2014.

In the studio, Ballas is working on recording what he hopes will introduce people to a new sound and a hearty body of work.

“It’s a pop record, but it’s definitely got essences of funk and Flamenco. … It’s very soulful in the lyrics and the melody, but it’s still a pop album,” he says of his debut release. “It sounds like my personality.”

Stay up to date on Mark Ballas onTwitter or his official website. His next performance at the Sayers Club is Saturday, August 17th.

Mark Ballas’ ‘DWTS’ blog: The best year of your life

avatar

Mark Ballas’ ‘DWTS’ blog: The best year of your life

Mark Ballas, Special for USA TODAY7:16p.m. EDT April 5, 2013

The ‘Dancing’ pro assesses last week’s Viennese waltz and what’s on tap for Monday.

We’ve had a great week so far. I’m loving that they have added new dance styles to the show, including contemporary which Aly and I will be taking on this week. I think it adds something for the fans, especially those who have been watching for a while. I feel like they’ve seen it all and they deserve something new and exciting and out of the box.

I’m really excited about our dance and song this week. The theme is “best year of your life” and for Aly, of course, that would be the Olympics. I’m looking forward to translating all the hours of hard work. For instance, all of the ups, the downs, the frustration, the joys, the focus and drive it took for her to win the gold medal into movement this week.

The song we have is a beautiful rendition of a song she would listen to during warm-ups at the Olympics. It’s going to be a change of pace for Aly this week since she hasn’t had to tap into such a deep character yet. And she is coping very well! I’m excited for you all to see this piece as I think it is very moving and heartfelt.

I was really pleased with how last week’s performance went. I thought Aly nailed it and she looked beautiful. That said, I wasn’t too thrilled with Carrie Anne’s “7″ or her comments, because for a hyper-focused person like Aly, I feel like she nailed the character and is improving every week. I would be the first person to tell her that she was not in character. And I thought she did a great job. This goes back to my opinion that when it comes to judging, the males have it easier than the females. There were a few “8′s” given out when I feel like Aly danced just as well if not better and she had more “dance” content. But again, judging is something we will never figure out.

Mondays for me have been epic, because after DWTS I drive straight to The Sayers Club in Hollywood for soundcheck as I play with a full band performance every Monday night. It’s an axing night. And the Sayers Club is the hottest place for live music in L.A. Their sound system and quality is amazing and the club and owner (Jason Scoppa) have been awesome to me and given me my own residency every Monday night after the show taping. We are going into our fourth performance and every week the crowd gets bigger and better.

The band consists of myself on lead guitar and vocals, another guitar player, bass, drums, keys and a full horn section. We play my original music that has a pop/Latin/funk feel to it.. We also play a couple of throw back covers that keep everyone grooving. So if you’re in the L.A. area, come down Monday nights to The Sayers Club on Sunset and Wilcox at 11:30 pm and see what its all about. Also, stay tuned for my Website, MarkBallas.com, which launches this week.
